Five Times Buffy Met Dean With A Question

"Who are you?"

Buffy stared curiously at the man walking out of the tree line.

"I think the more appropriate question is 'Who are you?'"

Buffy wiped the edge of her sword on the grass and stood up facing him. He was carrying a shotgun in one hand and a duffle bag in the other.

"I mean, you're pretty tiny for a Hunter and from what I just saw, you pack a pretty good punch."

"You're a Hunter. I should have known."

Buffy turned around and began walking away.

"Wait a minute! What is that supposed to mean?"

Buffy huffed as she turned around, hands on hips, and glared at the man standing in front of her.

"It means that I've come across Hunters before. Granted, my first run in with one wasn't all that great but I've met a few more in recent months. Not all that bad. But you're not team players either. There's more than enough demonic activity in this town for the both of us. I'm gonna go kill my share, you can go kill yours. And we'll just stay out of each others hair, okay?"

With that she turned around and left a confused and gaping Hunter behind.
~*~*~*~*~

"What are you doing here?"

He grinned a cocky smile and she rolled her eyes. Behind him, a taller man gave her an apologetic smile.

"Didn't think I'd find you, huh?"

Buffy shook her head. "I wasn't hiding from you. I just don't care."

"Well, I thought it might be a good idea to track down the elusive Slayer. See if she's all she's cracked up to be."

"Which Slayer?"

He frowned. "What?"

"Well, which Slayer? There's plenty here. Not sure how many are gonna want you to check them out though I'd suggest that if you wanna keep those body parts of yours in tact, you'll leave my girls alone."

"I thought there was only one Slayer?"

"Where are you getting your info from? Listen, it's getting cold with the door open."

She stepped aside and watched cautiously as both men walked past her into the expansive foyer. They looked at the large staircase leading up to the second storey and looked back at her in surprise.

"There's a lot of girls here. And this is sort of like their boarding school. We train them, teach them and eventually send them out to work when they're ready."

The taller one looked back at her with a friendly smile.

"So, you guys want in? We could give you some work. Better than drifting around aimlessly."

They looked at one another, a silent conversation passing between them before looking back at her with smiles.

"When were you going to tell me?"

Dean stepped back from the door in surprise and Buffy strode purposefully into the room. Sam winced and closed the laptop quietly.

"Buffy, uh, hi."

She turned around and pointed a finger at him. "Don't you 'hi' me! We had a deal! We give you the heads up on cases and you keep us in the loop. But I find out that you opened a Hellmouth - what were you thinking? Were you even thinking at all?"

"Don't get snarky with me. It wasn't even like that! We were trying to stop the end of the world!"

"And you didn't have time for a phonecall? A 'hi, we're just off to stop the apocalypse. See ya round.'?"

Dean looked sadly at Sam before looking at his feet and rubbing the back of his neck. "There were... complications."

"Like what? It had better be good because you've unleashed heaven knows how many demons into the world, some of which are-"

"Sam died!" he replied angrily.

Buffy turned around slowly and looked at him and he saw realisation hit her before she looked back at Dean.

"What did you do?" she almost whispered.

He looked away from both of them. "I made a deal."

"With a Crossroads Demon?"

"Yes."

"Do you even know what you've done?"

He stared at her defiantly.

"Sam, can you please give us a moment?"

Sam stood and quietly walked across the room and opened the door. He glanced back at them but neither were looking at him. He closed the door behind himself.
~*~*~*~*~

"Where did you need me?"

"Buffy, I'm glad you're here!"

Buffy smiled at Dean and Sam and walked over to the table where they had several maps open.

"Well, we can use a Slayer pretty much anywhere," Bobby said, as he came in from another room.

"What's the basic plan?"

"Find and destroy Lilith."

Buffy looked up at Dean and gave him a brief smile before looking back at the map and the pushpins stuck in it. Sam looked over at her uneasily and her eyes flickered at him before she tried to concentrate on the map. She was unsure that this was going to work but it was the plan that Sam had wanted to set in motion to save Dean and she was going to help in anyway she could.

Bobby pulled out a seat for her at the table and waited until she had sat before going over the plan they had put together. It was well thought out, could quite possibly work, if all the fates aligned, but Buffy had a sinking feeling that Dean wasn't going to be saved. And based on the expressions of everybody else in the room, they all knew it too.

Buffy helped them gather all of the necessary equipment but she couldn't take her eyes off of Dean. He stood relatively tall but whenever Sam looked away, his shoulders slumped just a little. He sent the occasional glance her way and as they all headed outside to the Impala, Dean pulled Buffy back.

"Take care of him."

She nodded. "You know I will. And I meant what I said Dean, we're gonna get you out. You know that it's not going to be easy down there but just know I'm coming for you."
~*~*~*~*~

"Why are you here?"

He sat beside her on the curb and looked up at the sky.

"I wanted to thank you. I don't think I've said it since... I just wanted to make sure you knew."

Buffy nodded. "I do."

"I'm, uh, I'm sorry. For, you know, splitting after."

Buffy nodded slowly and turned to look at him. "Why are you here?"

He looked down at his feet and took a deep breath.

"I'm sorry. I just, I, well this thing with us," he said, gesturing between the two of them. "Well, I didn't want you to see me like you did. I didn't want..."

Buffy looked up at him and waited until he looked her in the eye.

"I know what you went through. I'm sorry it took me as long as it did; I was working as fast as I could. But nothing I saw down there would ever make me change my opinion of you. You did what you had to to survive."

There was a silence between them that stretched out as they became lost in their own thoughts.

"Dean, what is 'this thing'?"

Dean wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her in closer, softly kissing her hair.

"I don't know. I really don't know."

Five Times Dawn Noticed Colour

The air was violently shoved out of Dawn's lungs as she was thrown into the wall. The drapes hanging down hid the bricks from view but she felt every single one of them against her back. As she crumpled to the floor, the drapes came with her and fell over her head surrounding her view in violet. She frantically tried to untangle herself but the sound of fighting had her stopping as she allowed air back into her lungs and tried to listen. Her fingers began searching for the end of the drapes as the noises ceased and silence filled the air.

She had just found the edge when a set of fingers wrapped themselves around it and pulled. The dimly lit room wasn't too much of an adjustment for her and she found herself staring into the bluest pair of eyes she had ever seen. He gave her a small smile before extending a hand out to her.

"I'm Sam."

Dawn's eyes darted around the room but she saw no sign of the vampire she'd been fighting.

"Uh, he's gone, if that's what you were wondering."

Dawn placed her small hand inside his and allowed him to help her stand. His warm hand gave her relief as she stood.

"Um, thanks. I'm Dawn."

He smiled at her and she almost melted on the spot. As they walked outside together, Dawn picked up her bag in the doorway and slung it over her shoulders.

"Wanna go grab a coffee?"

He smiled again and she realised that she wanted him to do that more often. "Sure."
~*~*~*~*~

She spun around and the stake flew from her hand. She watched as Sam's hand reached out and snatched it mid-air and she grinned inwardly - they made a fantastic team together. His hand drove downward and the stake pierced the heart of the vampire. He blocked the attack from the vampire on his right and pushed the stake toward its heart.

As though in slow motion, Dawn watched as a vampire appeared from their left as though materialising out of thin air.She tried to warn him but the vampire in front of her pushed her back with a sharp knock to the chest and left her gasping for air.

Sam seemed to realise the presence of the third vampire a moment too late and as the third vampire gripped his shoulders, drawing his attention, the other grasped his hand and thrust the stake into his chest. Dawn knew that it was probably the resistance from Sam which stopped him being staked in the heart and the trio of vamps fled as she raced to his crumpling body.

Her hand automatically went to his chest and a tear fell from her eye as she saw the crimson blood cover it quickly.

"Sam! Come on Sam, stay with me!"

As his eyes began closing against the pain, Dawn's hand went skyward and a small ball of green energy burst into the air like a flare leaving a trail of green light in its wake.

Willow appeared moments later and as her eyes fell on Sam's shuddering body, she fell to her knees beside them. A white glow emitted from her hand over his chest and her face contorted in pain. Spent, Willow dropped back from them and looked down at Sam.

"Sorry Dawnie, that's all I can do for now. I've repaired most of the internal damage but he'll still have a way to go."

Dawn nodded and looked back down at Sam as they waited for Dean and Buffy to arrive.
~*~*~*~*~

There was a knock on her apartment door and Dawn looked up in surprise. She wan't expecting anyone and everyone she knew would have called first. As she opened the door, she saw Sam standing there and she smiled, leaning forward to give him a hug.

"Hey Sam, wasn't expecting you for another fortnight. Where's Dean?"

Sam rolled his eyes. "He's looking over some stuff with Buffy."

Dawn stepped aside to allow him entrance and closed the door behind him. "Do you want a drink? Coffee?"

"I think we both know why I'm here."

Dawn turned around and Sam stepped closer, pressing his lips against hers and tangling his fingers in her hair. Her shock wore off quickly and she kissed him back, her arms winding around his neck.

In a sudden movement, he gripped her hair tightly and shoved her back into the door, pressing his body up against hers roughly. She pulled back from him and when he refused to release her, she roughly pushed him away from her.

"Come on Dawn. We've both been playing this game for too long. I want you, you want me. Why are you trying to fight it?"

Dawn frowned at him in confusion. "You're not Sam."

Sam threw his head back and laughed. As he looked back at her, his black eyes took her breath away. "Oh, you're very much mistaken. I'm all Sam."

Dawn inched her way around the room and Sam grinned at her as though they were playing a game. When she neared the side table, her hand felt along the edge until it hit the vase. Grabbing it, she flung it forward and the glass broke against his shoulder, the holy water inside spilling down and burning him. He screamed in anger and took a step toward her but her unintentional glance upward drew his attention and he looked up to see a devil's trap.

His lips quirked in a sadistic smile before he began stepping backwards. "Let's finish this some other time."

He reached the door and disappeared through it leaving a stunned Dawn in his wake.
~*~*~*~*~

He held out the gold ring to her and she stared in confusion, amazement and giddyness.

"Oh my gosh! Is this what I think it is?"

She grinned up at him and saw a similar smile on his face.

"Yep."

Dawn threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly, when she reeased him, she gave him a short kiss on the lips before taking the ring out of his hand and looking at the engraving on the inside.

"It's beautiful."

"And it's yours."

She slipped it onto her finger and held it up to the light. The sunshine reflected off of it and she looked up at Sam once more.

"Thankyou so much! I love it!"

He shrugged. "I double checked the engraving. It's all accurate so the protection on it will work. I would make sure you keep it on you though."

She glanced at him with an exasperated look. "Like I'm going to take this off."

"Well Buffy gave her seal of approval on it. She thought you would like the design. Though when I asked her to go ring shopping with me I think she thought I was looking for something else."

"As if."

"I'm going to ask you one day, you know."

Dawn raised an eyebrow. "We don't live for long Sam, not in this business."

"And for as long as we are, I want us to be together. Therefore, one of these days I'm going to ask you."

Dawn grinned at him and held a hand lightly to the side of his face. "And when you do, I'm gonna say yes."
~*~*~*~*~

Dawn lay her head against the window and looked at the dreary sky outside. All she could see was grey and it was as if the sky was sad with her.

Her hand clenched around her mobile and for the umpteenth time that morning she had looked at the display. Nothing. She'd been awake all night waiting for a call, waiting for a message - anything really. But nothing had happened.

Originally it looked as though the sun was going to shine bright but clouds had swept in and left it dreary and desolate. It was how she felt.

Dawn knew that Buffy would have called. She would have realised that her sister was sitting at home, worried sick, and called to say everything was fine. All Dawn could reason was that they had been unable to save Dean. She didn't know why Buffy hadn't called yet but she supposed that Sam would have been distraught and that Buffy was trying to help him.

There was a small beeping sound that echoed through her lounge room like a fog horn and she jumped as her mobile vibrated against her hand. She looked at it in surprise, as though she didn't know what to make of it before her finger hesitated over the button. She wanted to desperately know what was going on but at the same time, she didn't want to get bad news. She didn't want to hear that Dean was dead. Or worse, that Sam was. She hit accept before she had too much time to think.

"He didn't make it. Sam a mess. We're on our way home now."

As if on cue, the rain started drizzling down the window as the first tears fell down her face. Sam was going to need her when he arrived but for now, she was going to grieve.
