Blame
not_from_stars for this - I know I do :P There was a certain fanmix entry that included Air Supply and then the songs got stuck in my head. Some of you already know how much I love them. I grew up on them. Anyhoo, I was listening to some of their songs on Kate (my iPod) while I fell asleep and certain songs created bunnies that would not leave me alone so I had to write them up. My profuse apologies to
thewickedquill whom I promised some Trory love. I'll have to post those tomorrow because I won't have enough time now.

She didn’t even knock as she entered his apartment and the moment she stepped across the threshold, he stopped dead in his tracks and froze, watching her every movement carefully. He was a Transgenic, expert at reading an opponents body language and determining just where they would strike, and with what force, so technically he should have had the upper hand but she was just as skilled as he was and appeared to be watching him just as carefully as they stood opposite one another in a stalemate. With a flick of her wrist, she slammed the door behind her and the bang from the door brought back a flush of memories that he had nearly deluded himself into believing were forgotten.
I know just how to whisper and I know just how to cry
I know just how to find the answers and I know just how to lie
I know just how to fake it and I know just how to scheme
I know just when to face the truth and then I know just when to dream
An expanse of dark skin. Fingertips ghosting down her side. Hair brushing his chest. Burning lips blistering on his. An arching back. Fingers digging into skin and nails running down his back.
A simultaneous release and the echo of a shutting door.
And I know just where to touch you and I know just what to prove
I know when to pull you closer and I know when to let you loose
He held his hands up in front of him and tried to relax the straining muscles in his body. In an effort to look nonplussed, he titled his head to the side, trying to mirror one of her many questioning looks. She simply stared at him and he took a deep breath.
And I know the night is fading and I know the time’s gonna fly
And I’m never gonna tell you all the things I gotta tell you
But I know I’ve got to give it a try
“Max, I know why you’re here but you have to listen to me, okay?”
Her pupils dilated further at the sound of his voice and he inwardly cursed at noticing them.
“This can’t happen. Not again. You don’t understand what’s happening and you shoul- just stop moving!”
Her foot paused in it’s slide forward and she tilted her head down slightly, looking up at him with an alluring glance. It had it’s desired effect and he’d taken a step forward before realising what he was doing.
And I know the roads to riches and I know the ways to fame
I know all the rules and then I know how to break them
And I always know the name of the game
It had been the corners of her mouth that had done it. If he hadn’t seen the slight upturn, he may have just walked straight over to her but the smile had been like a bucket of cold water over him and he’d almost physically shivered as he stopped and looked up at her. The almost indiscernible frown on her face stood out starkly in contrast to the burning desire in her eyes and he let out a loud breath to try and focus.
But I don’t know how to leave you and I’ll never let you fall
And I don’t know how you do it, making love out of nothing at all
This had been her problem. No, to be fair, it had been his. She’d expected to walk away from it as though nothing had happened and in all reality, it was pretty fair. It had been heat, nothing more than that on the surface and although she’d tried to hide it, everybody in TC had known what had happened. Those that could smell them all over each other had told those who couldn’t but it had been nothing more than a footnote to them. They were the leaders and it only made sense that if she sought out someone during heat, he would be the only choice. She’d tried to hide her blush when someone had mentioned it in passing but he’d seen it.
In fact, he’d seen everything and it occurred to him that something wasn’t right. Lingering feelings weren’t uncommon but as the days passed they didn’t lessen. Instead, they increased to the point where he’d wasted hours and hours replaying the night in his head to try and figure out what had been so different, so unusual that left him feeling the way he was.
And at first he’d believed it was only him but she wasn’t as unaffected as she let on. He’d catch the odd lingering glance during meetings or weapons checks or any moment when he really shouldn’t have seen them. And when his mind had made the earth shattering conclusion that it had and left no room for denial, he sat still for hours while every movement, every look, came under the scrutiny of a fresh perspective.
Every time I see you all the rays of the sun are streaming through the waves in your hair
And every star in the sky is taking aim at your eyes like a spotlight
The beating of my heart is a drum and it’s lost and it’s looking for a rhythm like you
You can take the darkness from the pit of the night and turn it to a beacon burning endlessly bright
I’m gonna follow it, ‘cause everything I know, well it’s nothing ‘til I give it to you
He loved her. The night between them had been something more than a heat-induced reaction and the previous ladies man, bachelor extraordinaire, had done the unthinkable and fallen in love with someone. It had probably been happening for a long time, he reasoned, something that he’d refused to see until he had no choice in avoiding it.
What had started off as hard, feverish kisses and furiously moving hands had changed into something more gentle and loving at some point and neither of them had noticed. It had taken mere moments for their clothes to be torn from their bodies but the following movements were slow and careful and she hadn’t left until the next morning. She’d picked up her clothing and disappeared out of his apartment as though nothing had happened and neither of them had discussed it since.
But now she was standing before him with the same look in her eyes as before only this time he noticed the glint of something he hadn’t noticed before. With hands still out before him, he took measured steps and slowly made his way across the room until he was standing just in front of her. He could see that she was desperate to move but a part of her was waiting to see what he’d do and that part had the control for now.
He reached out gingerly and placed a hand on the side of her face, gently cupping her cheek. She tilted her head toward it and he saw the ends of her mouth turn up in a genuine smile. He leant forward and gave her a soft, chaste kiss. It lasted only a moment but it offered so much more and when he pulled back, he looked into her eyes. She didn’t respond and his heart was beating so loudly in anticipation that he was sure she would hear it. Her eyes closed briefly before she leant toward him and kissed him softly back.
I can make the run or stumble, I can make the final block
And I can make every tackle at the sound of the whistle, I can make all the stadiums rock!
I can make tonight forever or I can make it disappear at the dawn
And I can make you every promise that has ever been made and I can make all your demons be gone
But I’m never gonna make without you, do you really wanna see me crawl?
And I’m never gonna make it like you do, making love out of nothing at all
It was an unspoken agreement. A mutual acknowledgement that there was something more there and was worth risking everything for. He pulled her closer as his lips found hers and he smiled against her mouth as her fingers ran lightly over his barcode.

Summary: Katara realises what just what is worth giving up - and what isn't.
A/N: Song is ‘All Out Of Love’ by Air Supply. I scribed the lyrics so if there are any mistakes, they’re mine - and I’ve probably been singing them that way my whole life :P

Katara looked out at the water from the bow of the ship and let her thoughts get carried away on the wind. The seasons had begun changing once again and winter was falling, although the further north they went, the warmer the winds got. Winter in the Fire Nation wasn’t nearly as cold as winter at the South Pole but there was still a chill in the air and the nights were longer.
She looked up at the twinkling stars above her and her sad smile fell as tears began making a salty path down her cheeks. Her heart was heavy and whenever she thought about how she’d left him, her heart wrenched and, if possible, seemed to break into even smaller pieces. She tried to reason that he had more important things to do than fighting to stay with her and although it was ridiculous, her tribe still held an unreasonable animosity toward him. It had seemed like the easiest option for her was to leave and she’d left without saying goodbye to spare them both the heartache.
News had reached the South Pole that he was getting married and she had seen the posters proclaiming his engagement. It had completely shocked her and although she’d been devastated, she wanted him to be happy. If it made him happy, then she could live with that, even if she was wishing it had been her. But that night when she’d curled up in bed and brought out the poster from underneath her pillow, she’d taken the time to study him.
He looked thinner than the last time she’d seen him but the lack of a smile had caught her attention. He wasn’t smiling. There weren’t even hints of a smile and although he was standing next to her, it seemed like there were no feelings of affection between them.
I’m lying alone with my head on the phone thinking of you ‘til it hurts
I know you hurt too but what else could we do, tormented and torn apart
I wish I could carry your smile in my heart for times when my life seems so low
It would make believe what tomorrow could bring when today doesn’t really know
That night she’d dreamt of him. She dreamt that they’d been sitting in a garden and he’d been watching her bend the water nearby into different shapes, laughing at some of the ridiculous things she’d come up with. She’d woken happy until she realised she was in the South Pole and he was nowhere nearby.
Without even thinking about it, she’d gone onboard the next ship heading out, not even saying goodbye to Sokka or her father and leaving them nothing more than a note. She hadn’t offered an explanation for her actions because she still didn’t know herself. But as the nights passed, she realised that she had one last chance and she couldn’t let him go without being sure.
“Princess Katara? We’re nearly there. Should reach port by morning.”
I want you to come back and carry me home, away from these long, lonely nights
I’m reaching for you, are you feeling it too, does the feeling seem oh so right
And what would you say if I called on you now and said that I can’t hold on
There’s no easy way, it gets harder each day, please love me or I’ll be gone
She nodded at the captain and turned back to the water. It was her element, a part of her, but she felt as though she was no longer whole and knew that he was the only thing that could fill that void. She could still bend, still move water as though she was the water, but it didn’t seemed as fulfilling anymore - like when she’d been bending at the South Pole before everything had started. She’d known it, felt that there was more to bending, that there was more that she could do. A part of her had been missing.
And now that she’d found him, recognised the missing part of her spirit in someone else, the one who was her other half, she couldn’t let him go just because of some petty differences that neither of them even had.
I’m all out of love, I’m so lost without you, I know you were right, believing for so long
I’m all out of love, what am I without you, I can’t be too late to say that I was so wrong
Katara stepped off the ship and into the bright morning sunshine. Those they got up early for trade were setting up around the docks and a few people were simply milling about. But as she scanned the crowd, here eyes fell on one particular figure and she couldn’t understand why he was alone. Surely he would have been recognised and surrounded by people.
His eyes softened and his mouth moved into an easy smile. Of their own accord, her feet rushed her forward and she found herself in his arms as he drew her into a hug, one hand lightly running through her long hair.
“I heard you were coming...”
“Zuko, I’m so sorry! I should never have left in the first place, I shouldn’t have run- “
She was cut off as he pressed his lips urgently to hers and pulled her in tighter. The bag she’d been holding in her hand fell to the ground as she wrapped her arms around his neck and behind her she felt the water calling to her, the push and pull rhythmic and gentle as though it was now at peace too.

“Thank you.”
He heard her soft intake of breath from over the phone and he waited while she collected her thoughts. His hands brushed over the piece of paper in his laps, his fingers tracing the face of his mother.
He almost never stayed back as long as he did today. But a part of him had just wanted to see if she’d show; to see if she could find him. It was risky but he’d seen her frustration in not catching him change to curiosity as she waited until the team had headed back to the cars before slipping an envelope into the mailbox on what used to be his front door. He’d waited three hours before moving, three hours to make sure it wasn’t some elaborate trap.
It was almost as if he could hear her shrug from his end. “Something I just came across. It was in a file... one my mother had put together and hidden before she died.”
He wanted to hold onto her. He knew how much she was hurting, how much they both were, and that the only way they would ever find closure would be to uncover all secrets the Centre had hidden away. Until then, they would both be searching whilst one tracked and the other hid.
This is the time when you need a friend, you just need someone near
I’m not looking forward to the night I’ll spend thinking of you when you’re not here
How many times will I think about the things I’d like to do
Always denied the right to live my life the way I want, I want to share it with you
She pulled the blanket further up her body as she settled against the pillows on her bed. It wasn’t the first time she’d gotten a phone call from Jarod and it wouldn’t be the last. If the Centre had any idea that they were speaking on the phone, they’d undoubtedly start making sure each call was traced - not that it would do any good. He was too good for that. Besides, the calls were the only time they had out of the cat and mouse game they’d been forced into and she’d never give them up.
“Jarod...”
The words got caught in her throat as she tried to vocalise what was going on in her head. But like always, he seemed to know and the silence that followed was companionable. He asked about her latest gift from him and she regaled him with humourous tales. They never talked about the chase; not where he was or how close to finding him they were. The calls weren’t for that and they both seemed to know it.
I think of your kiss as the days roll by and I write the words you love
And what I can’t say in a letter will just have to wait ‘til I get home
There’s not much time to tell you half the things that I should
Only that I’m so glad I fell in love with you and I’d do it again if I could
She yawned again and Jarod smiled. They hadn’t been on the phone long, they never were, but she must have been tired. She hadn’t looked like she’d been sleeping properly when he’d seen her earlier and had they had anything more than a “You run, I chase” relationship on the surface, he might have said something.
Instead, he took over the conversation with an anecdote about someone he’d met once until he heard the soft sounds of her sleeping. He whispered a soft ‘goodnight’ into the phone and hung up. Jarod put his phone on the bedside table and as he lay down on the bed, he didn’t even give a cursory glance at the bioengineering book beside him. He closed his eyes and fell into a dreamless sleep.
Sleep, like a child, resting deep, you don’t know what you give me I keep
For these moments alone
His little hands covered hers and she looked up at him with big eyes.
“I had a nightmare. Daddy was falling and I couldn’t help him.”
His smile brought comfort to her and she wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. There was a beat when he didn’t seem to know exactly how to respond before she felt his arms circle around her and she softly sighed, feeling better than she had since before the nightmare. She snuggled once into his shoulder before she pulled back and eyes watched her as she back across from him.
“Thank you.” he said, tilting his head a little to the right.
She smiled. She should really be the one thanking him for easing her fears but she seemed to understand what he was talking about and she gave him a single nod before she remembered that she’d already stayed too long. She quickly stood and snuck back out the way she’d snuck in and as she looked over her shoulder before leaving she saw a small smile make its way onto his face.
Close your eyes, I want to ride the skies in my sweet dreams
Close your eyes, I want to see you tonight in my sweet dreams

I, I was the lonely one wondering what went wrong
Why love had gone and left me lonely
I, I was so confused, feeling like I’d just been used
Then you came to me and my loneliness left me
She looked out into the black night and tried to find the constellations she’d learnt about. The stars were easy to spot in the relative emptiness of the town and she wrapped her arms around herself as a cool wind brushed past her. A heavy warmth draped itself over her shoulders and she turned her head to see Pete standing there with a mug of hot chocolate.
“Thought you might need this.”
She nodded and gave him a half smile as she accepted the warm mug. It warmed her cold fingers and she turned and sat down on the lounge that Pete had turned around. He smiled as she sat next to him and sipped from his own mug. Glancing sideways, she wondered what he thought about when he looked out into the night like she did. Constellations?
I used to think I was tied to a heartache, that was the heartbreak
But now that I’ve found you
“Sorry today was so hard.”
She thought that she might cry if someone mentioned Sam. It was the anniversary of his death and even though she hadn’t said anything, Pete seemed to have known. He’d been treading on eggshells all day, making sure that he didn’t do anything that might upset her. And given his disposition, she was sure it had been a hard task.
She’d thought about him, obviously, but there wasn’t the ache that she usually felt. She no longer blamed herself for his death and it seemed that when she had stopped that, she’d put his memory aside in a safe spot reserved only to him. She just hadn’t realised that she’d let go of him at the time.
You, you knew just what to do ‘cause you had been lonely too
And you showed me how to ease the pain
And you did more then mend a broken heart ‘cause now you’ve made a fire start
And I, I can see that you feel the same way
“Thanks, for today.”
He nodded and she saw him try to hide a relieved smile in his mug. The corner of her mouth turned up and she bumped her shoulder against his.
“It’s good to see you smile. A real smile.”
He was surprised but he didn’t say anything. She looked down at the mug in her lap and noticed goosebumps along his skin. Holding the mug between her knees, she shifted in the blanket and wrapped one end around his shoulders. She picked the mug back up and finished off the drink, pointing out to the stars before them.
“Think we’re ever gonna travel in space? I mean, humans in general. Think we’re ever gonna have big ships and colonise other planets, other galaxies?”
He laughed and she raised an eyebrow.
“Of all the people to hear that from, I’m surprised it was you.”
“What? I listen!”
He shook his head and looked out thoughtfully. “I dunno. I’d like to think we’d be travelling amongst the stars one day.”
She laid her head on his shoulder and he put an arm around her, pulling her in closer.
“Sounds nice.” she said wistfully.
I never dreamed there’d be someone to hold me until you told me
And now that I’ve found you
A few hours later, she woke up with a start and it took a few moments to register where she was. She noticed Pete had fallen asleep with his head on an awkward angle and that, at some point, Leena had closed the doors and placed a second blanket over them. Myka picked up the cushion that had been behind her and wiggled it underneath his head. Settling herself back down, she lay her head back on his shoulder and wrapped an arm around his waist before falling gently back to sleep.
From beside her, Pete smiled.
Even the nights are better now that we’re here together
Even the nights are better since I found you
Even the days are brighter when someone you love’s beside you
Even the nights are better since I found you
